Guzmania are named in honor of Anastasio Guzman, an eighteenth-century,
Spanish naturalist. They are found naturally in the Andean forests,
southern Florida, throughout the West Indies and throught Central
America. Guzmainia are predominately epiphytic and found in sahded,
damp areas in forest from sea level to over 10,000 feet in elevation.
They have smooth-edged, glossy leaves that form a rosette. The flowers
and bracts raditate around all sides of the stalk. The bracts are
usually brightly colored and flowers of white or yellow. The blooms are
very long lasting. They should remain potted in smallish containers.
During the summer they will need frequent water and misting that can be
decreased in cooler months. They are fairly cold sensitive and should
not be watered in the evening during cold weather. Also, only fertilize
during active growing (warmer) months.
