Neoregelia are named in honor of Eduard von Regal a Russian botanist and
superintendent of the botanic Garden in St. Petersburg. These are
mostly native to in eastern Brazil although a number are found in
Columbia and eastern Peru. Growing well both indoors and outdoors this
has been a popularly, cultivated species since the early nineteenth
century. In the wild the plants grow mostly on the ground or along
lower limbs of trees in shaded areas along the coast and at higher
elevations. They were easily found by early collectors. They are
medium-sized, compact growing plants. These are a low-blooming genus
with the flowers nestled in the heart of the plant. Much of the
attraction is in the colored foliage and flowers are seen only upon
closer inspection. While these plants are shade-loving, the foliage of
plants that receieve a bit more sun will have shorter and wider leaves
with much brighter coloration. Many hybrids of neorgelias have produced
a variety of colors, leave shades and forms.
