Vriesea are named in honor or Dutch botanist W. de Vriese. Their
spreading form and long, bright blooms have made this a highly desirable
species since the early nineteenth century. This is a highly dispersed
genus. They are found from sea level to over 10,000 feet in elevation.
Generally, they come from Mexico, Central America and the West Indies,
Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina although the greatest
diversity seems to be in Costa Rica. They are very adaptable to a
household environment and have been hybridized more than any other
species. Vriesea like filtered, bright light and need plenty of fresh
air flow. They are cold sensitive and like a high humidity, too. The
plants are medium-sized with spreading foliage, usually with
multicolored banding. The blooms are erect with bright red bracts and
yellow flowers that peek out from between the bracts.
